We know nothing about purchasing a headstone. Where do we start?
To prepare for your first discussion about purchasing a headstone, here are some things you should know:
- Have you purchased a cemetery lot? If yes, what is the lot information (Section, Lot, Grave numbers)
- Is it a single grave, two grave, etc. This is important so that we know how much space you have to work with
- If the stone is being placed in a family lot, what is the name of the lot owner
What options are available for custom headstones?
We offer a wide range of options for custom headstones to ensure a unique and fitting tribute to your loved ones. From classic granite designs to bespoke shapes featuring intricate sandblasted details, our team works closely with you to craft a piece that reflects personal stories and achievements. What’s the difference between Skin-Frosted engraving and V-Sunk engraving?
Skin- Frosted engraving is very shallow and only removes the polished top layer to expose a light matte texture. It’s usually used on dark granite (black, blue, red) where high natural contrast makes the shallow engraving legible. This type of engraving is usually painted using a Lithochrome paint that is specially formulated to withstand UV rays and harsh weather. The paint typically last between 5 and 25 years depending on the climate.
V-Sunk engraving is used on lighter granite (Barre gray, Pink) and is deeply sandblasted creating a V shape, which is necessary for long-term readability. V-Sunk engraving is often placed in a panel as to not blend into the color of the stone.
Which finish is better; all polished or rock pitched? e or Question
First and foremost, it depends on how you want the stone to look. Most people are concerned about lichen growth on rock pitched stones which is why they choose a polished finish. One is not better than the other.
Things to consider when choosing:
- Rough surfaces are more porous making them prone to trapping dirt and moisture
- Polished surfaces will show water spots, dust and scratches more easily, but will resist lichen buildup
- An all polished stone can be more costly than a stone with a polished front and back and rock pitched, top and sides.
After we’ve finalized our decision, how long can I expect before the stone is installed in the cemetery?
That depends on a couple of things. If we have the stone you’ve chosen in stock, typical lead time is 6-8 weeks.
However, if we have to order the stone, it can sometimes take upwards of 6 months before we recieve the stone and an additional 3-4 weeks before we are able to install it.
Between the time you finalize your stone and when it’s set in the cemetery, the concrete foundation will be installed.
